Carpets
were swept with a broom or a hand-brush to remove crumbs and dust. Marks would
be removed with a scrubbing brush. From time to time, carpets would be hung
over the clothes line and given a good thumping with a carpet beater.
Wooden floors were scrubbed or wiped with a floor cloth or mopped clean. The
mop bucket had a built in drainer to squeeze the mop dry.
