Several parties, principally females, have recently had their pockets picked on the railway trains and stations of this district. The greater portion of the depredations appear to be committed on the Newcastle and North Shields, and the Newcastle and Berwick lines. A lady, a few days ago, had her purse, containing a sovereign and a half, (£1.54) taken out of her pocket, while waiting in the station to take her ticket for Berwick; and a young woman, while proceeding in the train to Tynemouth, was robbed of 16s 6d (83p). A systematic gang of pickpockets are evidently in active operation, and it would be well for the police to be vigilant, and the public on the alert while crowding into railway stations, or travelling by the trains. |
