The opening of the new Whitley Bay Promenade by the Duke of Northumberland in May 1911.

The building of the Promenade began in 1893 when the section between Rockcliffe and East Parade was paved and Corkscrew stairs were built at the foot of the Esplanade. During the depression the unemployed were given temporary work on the Promenade extensions. The Northern Promenade, Rendevous Cafe, and Panama Bathing Station were built in 1925-26. Between 1928 nd 1930 the Southern Lower Promenade and paddling pool were built by back filling a new sea wall with refuse from Backworth Colliery.
