Possessions of Tynemouth Priory

Click and drag to reveal the text underneath.

The priory also owned, at the time of the dissolution, a fee farm rent from the tower of Craster and lands in Warkworth, Donkin, Rigg, Woodhorn, North Seton, Ellington, Merfsen, Newbiggin, Seghill, Holywell and Hartley as well as several houses in Newcastle and Gateshead.

The dissolution: in the time of Henry VIII the churches were stripped of their power and wealth. The lead was torn from the roofs and sometimes even the stone was taken away and re-used in putting up new buildings.
