I’m Geordie and I’m a pitman. I am so important to the story of North Shields that they chose me to be a ‘bearer’ on the town crest. Just as important is my friend, the seaman, so they made him a bearer as well. I worked deep underground, cutting coal from the rock. This was in 1849, but the monks from Tynemouth had been digging for coal long before me.
