The Prior of Tynemouth was a powerful and important man. As well as running the monastery he controlled lands throughout Northumbria.
The rent and income from these lands made the Priory extremely wealthy.
In 1225 the prior was Germanus. He decided to improve fish supplies and also increase the wealth of the priory even more. He granted the local people the right to build shiels at the Pow Burn.
