A Cullercoats Anniversary

It is interesting to note that to-morrow will complete 200 years since the passing of the shipping industry at Cullercoats, for on that day, in the year 1726, the last cargo was loaded. The vessel in question was the Fortune of Whitby, and the cargo was 21 tons of salt.

In those days Cullercoats was of far greater importance than it is at present, and coals, salt and grindstones were exported in large quantities. The owners of the colliery at North Shields were not permitted to load their vessels in that town, and consequently they sent their coals to Cullercoats, from whence they were shipped.

The site of the old ballast hill is now occupied by houses in Beverley Terrace, while the remains of the old salt pans may still be seen along the end of the South Pier.
