| Map of the Island | The Northumbrian shore has a rich natural and cultural heritage. St. Mary's Island and Lighthouse, at the north side of Whitley Bay, are centrally placed on this coastline and captures much of its character. The island is connected to the mainland by a short causeway, which the sea covers once every twelve hours.
The time, depth and length of coverage change with the ageless succession of the spring and neap tides. Natural forces therefore decide the planning of a visit to St. Mary's.
