While trawling is in operations, the vessel is steered over various courses at about 3 knots per hour for about 3 and a half to four hours. When the gear is hove in and the procedure, which is similar to that when the gear is being shot is as follows:

When the gear is being shot the Skipper takes the wheel. The 2nd hand stands by the after snatch block. The 3rd hand works the winch, whilst one of the deck hands stands by the forward hook. The 2nd hand knocks out aft. The 3rd hand heaves on the winch, and the deck hands stand by to take the messenger ropes from the wings of the nets to the winch, and this heaves in the belly of the net. Next all hands haul in by hand the slack of the belly of the net; a sling is then put round the "cod end" hooked on to a wire from the masthead, and the bag hove up on board, emptied on deck, which is divided into ponds i.e squares.
