Northumberland Advertiser

A meeting of nearly 300 seamen of this port took place on Cullercoats sand on Thursday afternoon. A ring being formed, one of them stepped to the centre and addressed those around him. He said that they had met there for the purpose of endeavouring to better their wages and proposed that, instead of four pounds a London Voyage, which they were then receiving, they ought to have five pounds. They encountered peculiar hardships and danger during the winter, and thought their claims but just. To accomplish such object, the speaker exhorted them to use no means but those allowed by act of parliament. It was then agreed that none should go to sea after Monday next but at this advance of wages, and that at the commencement of next year the wages to be four pounds ten shillings throughout the year. The assent to these propositions was given by three hearty cheers, and the meeting broke up.
