1772 Drowning

Newspaper article dated 1833.

17 December 1833 Northumberland Advertiser

A PROVIDENTIAL ESCAPE On Monday last, the 9 th inst., as John Storey, James Croates, and Peterson, fishermen, belonging to Cullercoats, were proceeding to sea they observed a boat a great way out to sea with a signal of distress; they made towards the boat and found two boys making signals with their hats, who had been drifted out to sea from Shields harbour, on the Sunday before, while pleasuring. Had it not been for these men's timely assistance, these poor boys would have been lost in a very little time, as the boat they were in was nearly full of water, and they had only one oar and a small piece of old hammock for a sail. They got the boys into their coble, and the other boat soon disappeared: we therefore recommend the Humane Society to reward these men for their timely assistance – [We noticed this last week and reinsert it at greater length to oblige one of our readers.
