| baitbox | The box used to carry the miner's meal. |
| bank | The surface. |
| cant | On the slant. |
| clag or claggy | To stick or be sticky. |
| clarts | Mud. |
| dab-hand | Very good at something. |
| dad | To hit something or someone. |
| deputy | Underground official. |
| duds | Clothes. |
| fettle | To fix something. Hence the saying "to be in fine fettle." |
| hacky | Dirty. |
| hinny | A term of endearment. |
| hunkers | The pitmen sit on their hunkers (buttocks) while working down the pit. |
| marra | A term of endearment for two men who work together. Instead of saying friend or pal they would refer to their marra. |
| spelk | A small splinter of wood that gets stuck in to your skin. |
